The Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the British Army, Lieutenant General David Eastman, has written to Corps and Regimental Colonels, urging them to review their “historical associations” with men-only private members’ clubs, and to either engage with the clubs urging the full admission and participation of women, or else to disassociate from them.
The letter makes it clear that its scope is not limited to clubs where women are barred from membership, but also covers clubs where women do not enjoy full rights to access the whole clubhouse:
“This concern extends beyond clubs that exclude women entirely, to include those where membership rights, access, or participation differ on the basis of gender, for example, restrictions on the rooms that can be accessed, the events that can be attended, or whether members may make purchases on equal terms.”
