The British Army’s memo, from Lieutenant General David Eastman, requesting that Corp and Regimental Colonels review their links to single-sex clubs, and to those clubs that only allow partial access to women, has continued to draw publicity, including in the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph (with a follow-up op-ed from Charles Moore), Forces News, The Times, and the Spectator (“Why is the army’s top brass waging war on private members’ clubs?” asks Eliot Wilson).
Understandably, I am aware of considerable speculation across Clubland as to how this memo came about, and whether it may have been prompted by some specific incident in a club - indeed, several club members have been in touch suggesting just that. However, I do not feel able to go into any specifics, not least as several important details remain disputed by those involved; and I have yet to establish with any certainty that there was a causal link with the memo. I will therefore limit myself for now to saying that this story has been a topic of extensive discussion across clubs over the last fortnight.
